The Department of Education (DepEd) has renewed its partnership with the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) in a memorandum of agreement (MOA) signing at DepEd’s Bulwagan ng Karunungan today. The event also marks the 60th anniversary of SIL in the Philippines.
Present to sign the MOA are Education Secretary Br. Armin A. Luistro FSC and SIL Advisory Council Chairperson and SIL Philippine Director Glenn R. Stallsmith.
The SIL is an international non-profit organization that builds capacity for sustainable language development through research, translation, training and materials development. They are also assisting the DepEd in the implementation of Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE), as stipulated in DepEd Order 74 of 2009.
“Primary education using the mother tongue helps the process of learning by introducing concepts to students in the language they are most used to,” explains Luistro, adding that the partnership with SIL also helps in the preservation of indigenous Philippine languages in danger of extinction.
“Of the 170 plus languages we have, several are considered endangered. Together with SIL we will try to save them,” Luistro says.
The Transparency Seal is a symbol of a policy shift towards openness in access to government information.
