To revive the diminishing prestige of sports due to lack of media coverage, Department of Education (DepEd) Undersecretary Tonisito M.C. Umali encouraged the student journalists to write advocacy stories that would change the country’s mindset towards sports during the Sports Journalism Seminar held at NSCC, Caoayan, Ilocos Sur on April 13, 2018.

“Gone were the glory days when sports is still widely covered by the media. That’s why our youth lost their interest to sports. This is the time to write stories that would promote sports,” Umali said.

The Department of Education, in partnership with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), organized the two-day Sports Journalism Seminar participated by the National Schools Press Conference winners from the 17 regions of the country who would produce articles covering different events in the 2018 Palarong Pambansa.

“DepEd and PSC this time are working together to develop not only our athletes but our young journalists,” Umali added.

The sports coverage where student-writers are to submit hard sports news and feature articles is in line with the provision of the 1987 Philippine Constitution which states that programs should be developed to promote Palarong Pambansa and increase public awareness of the event, according to Umali.

“It is important to recognize the winners and their big contributions and that will only happen through you. You have a way to make a hype,” Umali told the journalists.
