VIGAN CITY, ILOCOS SUR – After being stuck in the 10th and 11th place in the previous years’ Palarong Pambansa, Department of Education – Region XI Director Atty. Alberto T. Escobarte expressed his hopes for the Davao Regional Athletic Association (DAVRAA) to land not lower than the fifth rank in the biggest sporting event held in Ilocos Sur.
“We hope to increase two notches from last year’s 7th place finish to be one of the top five among the regions in the 2018 Palarong Pambansa,” Escobarte said in an interview.
Compared to the previous years, DAVRAA provided longer days of training and poured in substantial resources, according to the director.
“Our athletes now are also new and younger than the previous years. We hope that these things will propel us to get our target,” Escobarte noted.
In terms of logistics, Region XI availed of the transportation services of the Philippine Air Force (PAF) through its C130 airplane which Escobarte considered as a big help to the delegation.
Transportation Committee Chair Dr. Alfeo Ingay added that using the C130 as an alternative mode of transportation saved a lot of money for the region.
“We loaded kitchen utensils, materials for decoration and other heavy things through C130 plane,” Ingay said in a separate interview.
Unlike DAVRAA delegates who travelled by ship in the previous Palarong Pambansa, the management was able to book flights of nine batches for their 686 delegates.
“We would like to thank Ilocos Sur Provincial Government for coordinating the 16 buses that fetched our delegates from the airport,” Ingay added.
Asked for his words of encouragement to the athletes, Director Escobarte urged them to play their best.
“Make good experiences and lessons in this sports competition,” Escobarte encouraged.
