April 3, 2017

They are couples who got perfect rhythm on the dance floor.
Thousand of eyes were glued to the 32 couples in the recent Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) 2017 Dance Sports Competition.
“This contest has been included again after several years of exclusion from the regular WVRAA events. This time, we have so many revisions and stricter compliance to the syllabus sent by the DepEd Central Office,” said Jomer V. Protacio, an adjudicator.
Eight schools divisions were represented by a pair of couple grouped into Juvenile (elementary level) and Junior (secondary level) dancing to the beats of samba, cha-cha and jive for Latin American category, and slow waltz, tango, quick step for Modern Standard, all danced by heat.
According to John Mark Coo, an adjudicator, all couples in the first heat performed all dance routines. Then the top three pairs were each given time to do their specialty dance and undergo the final heat, where in they were adjudged based on technical quality, movement to music, pairing skills, choreography and presentation.
Antique and Iloilo City sports dancers got gold in Latin American Juvenile and Junior categories, respectively, while Roxas City dancers dominated the floor with golds in two Modern Standard categories.
“We did not expect to win since we have less preparation time. We joined just to represent Antique. Now that we won, we must do our best and focus on the dance syllabus provided by DepEd,” concluded Keneth Mingute and Mayrelle Lagunday, coaches of Antique Division.
The winners will represent Western Visayasin the 2017 Palarong Pambansa.
