Odes to joy: The joy of memory

I was planning to write about the joy of music. However, the joy of memory intruded.

My earliest memories go back to a time when I was a little over a year old during the war years. Flashes of images and bits of conversation bring me back to a sitio at the bottom of a gorge beside a river in Barrio Guihob, La Libertad, Negros Oriental.

A friend of mine was surprised when I wrote that these days, whenever I am happy, I always feel sad. The happier I am, the sadder I become. “Why?” my friend asked.

“There is so much to be happy about! There should be no room for sadness!” Accordingly, I tried to review my long life and realized that, indeed, I have had much joy. Hence, this series on odes to joy, with apologies to Beethoven. What gives me so much joy? Writing letters is one source of joy for people of my generation.

Liling Magtolis Briones / Boiled Green Bananas (Again!)

Most of us look forward to All Saints’ Day holidays to do the things we have always wanted to do, enjoy the activities that bring us joy and emerge refreshed, energized, enlightened and, hopefully, inspired.

For me, it is books, music and dance.
This is my All Saints’ Day treat to myself: Two seasons and 10 episodes each of Gael Garcia Bernal’s TV series Mozart in the Jungle, five books of Nobel Laureate Mario Vargas Llosa, full- length ballet performances by Roberto Bolle and Svetlana Zakharova, a Facebook status to all whom I love.
