1. It has come to the attention of the undersigned that requests for the renaming of public schools and colleges after individuals are being received by this office with alarming frequency and that more often than not such individual being so honored has not reached a level of public achievement and recognition (apart from donating a school site or a similarly benevolent gesture) to warrant the remaining of a school or college in his honor. Moreover, this indiscriminate renaming of schools and colleges tends to create confusion and make these schools lose their unique identity especially with their alumni who hold particular attachments to the school’s original name.
2. It is, therefore, hereby directed that requests to rename public schools and colleges be carefully evaluated on their appropriateness to avoid indiscriminate practice thereof before such requests are indorsed to this office. Donors of school sites and similar benefactors of our school s may still be thanked and honored in appropriate ceremonies, without necessarily renaming the schools after them.
